Honda Shine

The Honda Shine 125 DSS BS6 is not designed to turn heads. It is designed to turn over reliably every morning for years. If you understand that distinction, the design makes complete sense.

The bodywork is clean and conservative. Smooth panel lines, no sharp edges trying too hard to look aggressive, no unnecessary plastic fins or decorative vents. The single available colour — classic Black — is either a limitation or a statement depending on how you look at it. We lean toward statement. Black on a 125cc commuter hides road dust, monsoon grime, and minor scratches better than any other colour. On Kathmandu's roads where your bike accumulates a layer of dust within 20 minutes of leaving the house, that matters more than most buyers realise before they own a lighter-coloured bike.

The 18-inch alloy wheels on both front and rear give the Shine a slightly more premium visual impression than many 125cc competitors that run 17-inch or mixed-size wheels. Taller wheels also contribute to stability on broken road surfaces — more on that in the handling section.

Build quality is genuinely Honda-level solid. We paid specific attention to this during testing because the ring road has some sections near Thankot and the Balkhu area where road surface breaks are sharp enough to test panel rigidity. Zero rattles. Zero flex in the body panels. The switchgear — left and right handlebar controls — feels tight and durable, not the loose plastic hollow feeling you get on some budget alternatives.

Compared to the Hero Splendor Plus (its most direct competitor) the Shine feels more refined in build. Compared to the Hero Super Splendor, they are closer — but the Shine still edges it in fit and finish consistency. Against the Bajaj Discover, there is no comparison — the Shine's construction quality is visibly higher.

One honest design note: The halogen headlight is a real weakness in 2026. Every competitor in this segment has moved to LED or at minimum a projector setup. The Shine's halogen headlamp is functional on well-lit city roads but on Kathmandu's darker residential lanes at night — the Swayambhu backroads, the Patan residential areas — you feel the brightness limitation. It does not make the bike unsafe, but it is the one design element that makes the Shine feel like it belongs to an earlier era.

The 123.94cc single-cylinder air-cooled fuel-injected engine making 10.59 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 11 Nm at 6,000 rpm is Honda's refined and proven platform. These numbers are actually on the stronger end of the 125cc commuter segment — the Hero Splendor Plus produces around 8.2 bhp, meaning the Shine has nearly 30% more power than its most common competitor while sitting in a similar price range.

Daily city commute — Koteshwor to Tinkune:

We used the Koteshwor–Maitighar–Tinkune route as our daily commute test, covering 15–18 km each way in typical Kathmandu rush hour. This is exactly the kind of riding the Shine is built for — stop-start traffic, frequent gear changes between first and second, occasional third gear bursts when traffic briefly clears.

Throttle response is immediate and smooth thanks to fuel injection. Unlike older carbureted bikes that need a warm-up period on cold Kathmandu mornings, the Shine starts and rides normally within seconds. At the Koteshwor light where you are stopping every 90 seconds, the wet multi-plate clutch stays light and consistent throughout — your left hand never gets tired, even after 45 minutes in crawling traffic.

First and second gear pull is strong. From a standstill at a traffic light, the bike moves with purpose — not aggressive, but confident. Overtaking a slower vehicle at 30–40 km/h in second or third gear requires minimal throttle input. The engine never feels like it is being asked too much in city conditions.

Ring road at 60–80 km/h:

The ring road is where the Shine feels most in its element. In fourth gear at 60 km/h, the engine is relaxed, vibration is minimal, and fuel consumption is at its best. This is the sweet spot for the Shine — effortless, economical, comfortable.

At 75–80 km/h in fifth gear on the Satdobato–Kalanki stretch, the Shine is still composed. Vibration increases slightly through the handlebar — typical single-cylinder character — but nothing that causes fatigue. The engine note deepens into a satisfying thrum that makes longer ring road rides enjoyable rather than just functional.

Kathmandu to Banepa via Araniko Highway — highway run:

This 32 km stretch from Kathmandu to Banepa, continuing to Dhulikhel (another 8 km), was our main highway test. The Araniko Highway is a genuine test for a 125cc commuter — long uphill sections on the Kathmandu exit, then relatively flat to Banepa, then uphill again to Dhulikhel at approximately 1,550 metres.

On the uphill sections out of Kathmandu toward Bhaktapur and then climbing toward Banepa, the Shine maintained 65–70 km/h in fifth gear on moderate inclines — creditable for a 125cc. On the steeper sections, it dropped to 55–60 km/h comfortably rather than struggling. There was no feeling of the engine being pushed to its limit.

On the flat Banepa stretch, we touched 94–96 km/h in fifth gear. The Shine's theoretical top speed of 102 km/h is achievable but requires a good downhill or perfectly flat straight. For practical highway use, 85–90 km/h is the comfortable cruising range where the bike feels stable and confident.

Coming back from Dhulikhel — mostly downhill into Kathmandu — engine braking in third and fourth gear is smooth and controllable. No drama, no jerkiness. This is where a well-tuned engine shows its character, and the Shine handles descents gracefully.

5-speed gearbox:

The all-up shifting pattern (all 5 gears shift up from first) is unusual for first-time riders used to the traditional 1-down-4-up pattern, but it becomes natural within a few days. Gear changes are clean and precise. The clutch engagement point is predictable. After three weeks on this bike we had zero missed shifts.

The Honda Shine 125 DSS BS6's handling is one of its strongest selling points in Nepal specifically — and the reason comes down to the wheels.

18-inch wheels on both ends is uncommon in the 125cc commuter segment where 17-inch rear wheels are standard. Taller wheels roll over road imperfections more smoothly and provide better stability on broken surfaces. On Kathmandu's roads — where you might encounter a smooth tarmac section followed immediately by a broken patch, a speed breaker, and then gravel from construction — the Shine's 18-inch setup absorbs the transition more gracefully than competitors.

City handling:

At 113 kg kerb weight, the Shine is light and easy to manage. The 1.9-metre turning radius allows clean U-turns on most Kathmandu roads — the kind you need to make constantly on ring road service lanes and residential streets. The diamond-type steel frame keeps weight distribution balanced, which means the bike does not feel nose-heavy or tail-heavy.

The handlebar position is upright and wide, giving natural steering input without requiring effort. In slow traffic filtering — the narrow gaps between buses near Ratnapark or the Kalanki junction — the Shine moves cleanly without anxiety.

Seat height at 791 mm is slightly taller than some 125cc commuters. Riders above 5'5" will find both feet flat on the ground easily. Shorter riders (5'3" and below) might find it slightly challenging for full flat-footing, but the bike's lightness means single-foot balance at traffic lights is manageable without stress.

Ergonomics:

Upright riding posture is the Shine's ergonomic identity. Back is straight, wrists are neutral, shoulders are relaxed. For riders who spend 45–60 minutes daily in traffic, this posture prevents the lower back fatigue that more aggressive riding positions cause over time. This is a deliberate design choice by Honda for a commuter-focused bike and it works.

Pillion riding:

The seat width and cushioning are appropriate for a 125cc commuter. Pillion passengers on the Kathmandu–Banepa run reported comfortable riding for the 40-minute journey. The grabrail is solidly mounted. Beyond 90 minutes with a pillion on the same seat, some discomfort is expected — this is not a touring seat.

Suspension:

Front telescopic forks handle city road imperfections well. Speed breakers are absorbed without the front end diving sharply. Rear hydraulic suspension is comfortable and handles the typical Nepal mix of smooth sections and rough patches. Neither the front nor rear suspension is adjustable — what you get from the factory is calibrated for a solo commuter in daily conditions, which is the vast majority of Shine riders.

The 240mm front disc brake with single-piston caliper and CBS (Combined Braking System) is the Shine's safety headline — and it earns that position.

Front disc performance:

In our testing on the ring road and Araniko Highway, the front disc provided progressive, predictable braking. From 70 km/h to a stop, the Shine pulled up without drama, without wheel lock, and without the front end diving excessively. The single-piston caliper is adequate for this bike's weight and power — you would not want more aggressive braking characteristics on a commuter-focused bike anyway.

On the Dhulikhel descent — where you are managing speed on a long downhill with occasional tight corners — the front disc allowed controlled speed management without constant firm pressure. This is where drum-only setups show their weakness, and where the Shine's disc setup genuinely earns its keep.

CBS braking:

Honda's Combined Braking System links the front and rear brakes — when you apply the rear brake, some braking force is automatically distributed to the front as well. For the Shine's core buyer — someone who may be a first-time or relatively new rider — this is a meaningful safety feature. It reduces the risk of rear wheel lockup from grabbing only the rear brake in panic situations, which is the instinctive but wrong response for most inexperienced riders.

Rear drum:

Adequate for daily use. Consistent performance in dry conditions. In wet monsoon conditions — wet ring road tarmac, puddles on the Koteshwor service lane — the drum rear requires slightly more lever pressure than a disc would, but CBS compensates by distributing some force to the front. Overall wet-weather braking is safe when riding sensibly.

No ABS: This is the honest gap in the Shine's safety package in 2026. ABS is becoming standard in the segment, and the Shine's CBS-only setup is a step behind where the segment is heading. For experienced riders it is a minor concern — for genuinely new riders, ABS would provide meaningfully better emergency braking outcomes.

Suspension in detail:

Front telescopic fork travel is comfortable for typical city speeds. Speed breakers at 30–40 km/h are absorbed cleanly. At 60 km/h on the ring road over a pothole, you feel it — not harshly, but clearly. The suspension is tuned for comfort over bump absorption, which is the right choice for a commuter.

Rear suspension on the Banepa road maintained its composure even on the broken stretches near the Bhaktapur bypass area where road surface quality drops considerably. No bottoming out, no excessive rebound.

This is the section where the Honda Shine 125 DSS BS6 genuinely separates itself from every competitor in the 125cc commuter segment.

That real-world figure is extraordinary. For context — the Hero Splendor Plus returns approximately 60 km/l ARAI but around 50–52 km/l real world. The Bajaj Discover 125 returns around 55 km/l ARAI but approximately 48–50 km/l real world. The Shine consistently beats both in practical riding conditions.

Our measured mileage by condition:

The highway mileage figure — 56–60 km/l — is the most impressive number. On a smooth highway at moderate speed, the Shine's fuel-injected engine running at its efficient cruise RPM returns figures close to the ARAI claim. This is rare for a petrol bike in real-world conditions.

The tank and range advantage:

The 10.5-litre fuel tank is significantly larger than most 125cc commuters. The Hero Splendor Plus has a 9.1-litre tank. The Bajaj Discover carries 10.2 litres. At 55 km/l real-world average with 10.5 litres:

Shine 125 riding range: approximately 555–580 km per full tank

In practical terms for a Kathmandu commuter doing 30 km daily — that is roughly 17–19 days between fuel stops. Nearly three weeks. The Shine transforms the fuel stop from a regular errand into an occasional one.

Over a year of riding, assuming petrol at NPR 180 per litre and 12,000 km annual riding:

• Shine 125 at 55 km/l: approximately NPR 39,300 in annual fuel cost

Digital instrument console (LCD):

The digital cluster displays speed, odometer, fuel gauge, and gear position indicator. Gear indicator is genuinely useful — knowing you are in third gear versus fourth without looking down saves decision-making time in fast-moving traffic. Fuel gauge is accurate and consistent — it does not suddenly drop from half to empty the way older analog gauges sometimes behave.

Readability in Kathmandu's direct sunlight is adequate. Not outstanding — a TFT display would be better — but usable without squinting or shielding the screen. At night, the backlit display is clear and readable.

What the Shine does not have:

No Bluetooth. No USB charging port. No riding modes. No LED headlight. No smart key. No touchscreen.

For the core Shine buyer — a daily commuter, office rider, or student whose primary concerns are reliability, mileage, and cost — none of these absences are genuine problems. You are not buying a Shine for its tech package. You are buying it because it will start every morning, cost almost nothing in fuel, and never surprise you with a workshop visit.

For buyers who specifically want a USB port or Bluetooth connectivity in a 125cc motorcycle, the Honda CB Shine SP (if available) or competitors like the Bajaj Pulsar 125 with USB charging would be worth comparing. But if those features genuinely do not matter to your daily riding life, the Shine's simplicity is a benefit, not a weakness. Fewer electronics means fewer things to go wrong over years of ownership.

Halogen lighting — the honest gap:

Three halogen lights — headlamp, tail lamp, and indicators. They work. They are visible to other road users. But in 2026, when most bikes at this price point have moved to at least partial LED lighting, the Shine's full halogen setup feels dated. The headlight specifically lacks the throw and brightness that LED units provide, which matters on Kathmandu's unlit residential roads at night.

This is not a reason to avoid the bike. It is a reason to ride conservatively at night on unlit roads, which you should be doing regardless of your headlight type.

Kick start + electric start:

Both options available. The electric start works reliably in all conditions. The kick start is the reassurance backup that bike riders in Nepal value — if the battery ever drains (a flat battery in a parking lot, after leaving the lights on), you can still get home. For a daily commuter bike, this redundancy has genuine practical value.

We used the Shine 125 as a primary daily commuter for three full weeks in Kathmandu. Honest daily impressions:

Morning start — no ritual needed:

Cold start on a 15-degree Kathmandu morning — press the starter, it fires within a second. No choke, no warm-up waiting, no fuel-flooding concerns that older bikes required. Ride normally from the first second. For daily riders who leave for the office at 8 AM and are already five minutes late, this immediate usability is worth more than it sounds.

Traffic filtering:

The 737 mm body width is narrow enough to filter through Kathmandu's standard traffic gaps. Wider than a scooter — you cannot squeeze through the absolute tightest gaps — but manageable in normal stop-and-go flow. The upright handlebar gives excellent visibility of the traffic ahead and easy input when changing direction.

Ground clearance at 162 mm:

This clearance handled every speed breaker on the ring road without scraping. Even the aggressive speed breakers outside schools in Lalitpur and the steep concrete ramps at petrol pump entrances cleared without issue. Nepal's road surface requires this minimum clearance, and the Shine comfortably exceeds what the roads demand.

Parking:

113 kg is light enough to push manually into tight parking spots. Side stand deployment and retraction is smooth. The bike parks upright on the stand without rocking, even on slightly uneven surfaces.

Heat management:

On the Koteshwor–Tinkune commute during what was a particularly warm May afternoon — stuck in traffic for 35 minutes with virtually no movement — the air-cooled engine managed heat adequately. No overheating smell, no temperature warning. Air-cooled engines need airflow to manage heat optimally, and prolonged absolute standstill is their challenge. But in typical Kathmandu stop-start where you are always moving at least a little, heat is a non-issue.

Long day riding:

On the Banepa–Dhulikhel day trip — roughly 4.5 hours total riding including breaks — rider fatigue was minimal. The ergonomics genuinely work for longer riding sessions. Lower back stayed comfortable throughout. The seat cushioning held up for the full day without the numbness that harder-seated competitors cause after 90 minutes.

Honda's service and parts network in Nepal is the strongest in the motorcycle industry. Authorised service centres from Kathmandu to Biratnagar, from Pokhara to Birgunj. For a daily commuter bike, having service access everywhere you might ride is a genuine practical advantage.

Service schedule:

The 3,500 km service interval is slightly longer than the 3,000 km on some competitors, which translates to one fewer service visit per year for an average rider — a small but genuine convenience.

Estimated costs per service:

Annual maintenance for a rider doing 15,000 km — approximately 4 services — works out to roughly NPR 13,000–15,000 including parts. For a 125cc commuter bike, this is very reasonable.

Warranty: 3 years or 42,000 km, whichever comes first. This is genuinely competitive warranty coverage for the segment — the Hero Splendor offers 5 years but at lower km coverage. Honda's 3 years / 42,000 km is more aligned with how most daily commuters actually ride.

Long-term reliability:

The Shine engine platform is one of the most proven in Nepal's motorcycle market. Riders with 60,000 to 80,000 km on their Shines without major engine work are not uncommon. The fuel injection system has proven more reliable in long-term ownership than older carbureted setups, particularly in Nepal's varying altitude and fuel quality conditions.

The Shine is priced above both Splendor variants — a NPR 26,000–56,000 premium over its most common competitors. The justification for that premium comes from three areas: stronger engine (10.59 bhp vs 8.2 bhp for Splendor Plus), better build quality and refinement, and Honda's historically stronger resale value in Nepal.

On-road cost estimate:

Add registration, insurance, and road tax — total on-road cost in Kathmandu is approximately NPR 3,20,000–3,30,000 depending on current rates. Confirm with your dealer.

Resale value:

This is where the Honda premium earns itself back. A well-maintained 2-year-old Shine 125 in Nepal typically sells at 78–82% of original purchase price. Hero Splendor, while also holding value well, typically resells at 72–76% at the same age. Over a 3-year ownership cycle, the Honda's better resale partially recovers the higher purchase price.

If you plan to ride for 3+ years and then sell, the Shine's total cost of ownership is genuinely competitive with cheaper alternatives when resale is factored in.

Three weeks. Koteshwor morning rush hour. Ring road evening rides. A full Kathmandu to Banepa and Dhulikhel run and back. The Honda Shine 125 DSS BS6 came through every part of the test doing exactly what it is supposed to do — quietly, reliably, and efficiently.

This is a bike you understand better the longer you own it. In the showroom, the Hero Super Splendor looks flashier and the Bajaj Discover looks more feature-packed. But after six months of daily ownership — after you have realised you are filling petrol once every 18 days, after your first service comes and goes with no surprises, after you mention your monthly fuel spending to a friend who rides something else and watch their face — the Shine makes its case without needing to shout.

The strongest reason to buy this bike in Nepal specifically is the engine and mileage combination. 10.59 bhp in a 113 kg commuter is genuinely spirited for daily use. 55 km/l real-world with a 10.5-litre tank is the most practical range equation in the 125cc segment. These two things together make the Shine work harder for you every single day than most alternatives at the same or even higher price.

The honest weaknesses — halogen lighting, no USB, no ABS — are real but they do not change what this bike fundamentally is. A thoroughly capable, extremely fuel-efficient, reliably low-maintenance daily commuter that you buy and then stop worrying about.
