Xoom 125

The Hero XOOM 125R FI looks genuinely sporty without trying too hard. The front LED headlamp is slim and sharp. The body panels have clean lines that look more expensive than the price tag suggests. From the side, the 14-inch wheels make the scooter look proportionally bigger and more confident than 12-inch scooters.

Color options in Nepal:

• Matte Axis Grey — clean, professional
• Candy Blazing Red — sharp and bold
• Matte Nexus Blue — premium looking

We tested the Candy Blazing Red and the Matte Nexus Blue. Both hold colour well after riding through Kathmandu's dusty roads. The matte finish on the grey and lime variants needs regular cleaning to stay looking good — matte paint shows fingerprints and water marks more than glossy finishes.

Build quality is solid for its price. The plastic panels feel thick and tight — no rattles on the ring road's broken sections. Handlebar switches feel durable. The seat stitching looks and feels well-made.

One honest note — the rear section of the scooter looks slightly narrow when you see it from behind. It is fine for one rider but feels a bit slim for pillion comfort on longer trips. This is a style choice by Hero that prioritises looks over pillion space.

Compared to the Honda Dio 125 H-Smart, the XOOM 125R FI has a bolder, more aggressive look. The Dio looks cleaner and more refined. The XOOM looks sportier and younger. Which one you prefer comes down to personal taste.

The 124.6cc air-cooled fuel-injected engine produces 9.8 bhp at 7,250 rpm and 10.4 Nm at 6,000 rpm. These are strong numbers for a 125cc scooter in Nepal.

Daily commute — Koteshwor to Putalisadak:

We used this route for five consecutive days during morning rush hour. The XOOM 125R FI handles stop-start traffic very well. The CVT automatic transmission is smooth and predictable. Throttle response from the fuel injection is immediate — no hesitation, no lag, no flat spots.

From a stop at traffic lights, the XOOM pulls away cleanly. Filtering through gaps in traffic near Maitighar and around the Singhadurbar area felt easy. The scooter never felt too wide or difficult to place in tight gaps.

Ring road at 55–70 km/h:

This is where the XOOM 125R FI feels most comfortable. At 60 km/h, the engine is relaxed, vibration is very low, and the scooter feels planted thanks to the 14-inch wheels. The wide 110/80-14 front and 120/70-14 rear tyres give noticeably more contact with the road than 12-inch scooters.

At 80 km/h on the open ring road stretch, the XOOM is still composed. Wind resistance becomes noticeable above 80 km/h — the upright riding position on any scooter creates wind pressure at high speed — but the scooter feels stable and not nervous.

Nagarkot road uphill — the real test:

From Bhaktapur toward the Nagarkot road, the climb begins immediately. With single rider, the XOOM 125R FI climbed steadily at 45–55 km/h on the moderate sections. On the steeper sections, it settled at 35–40 km/h without feeling like it was struggling.

With a pillion, the performance dropped more than we expected on steep sections. Speed dropped to 25–30 km/h on the sharpest climbs. The XOOM 125R FI will carry two riders uphill, but do not expect quick progress on steep Nepal hill roads with a heavy pillion.

The fuel injection system handles altitude very well. No performance drop, no hesitation, consistent throttle response from Bhaktapur valley to the higher Nagarkot sections.

Top speed:

On the flat Bhaktapur bypass road with light traffic, we reached 90–92 km/h comfortably. Getting to the claimed 95 km/h is possible but requires a longer flat stretch than we had. For daily Nepal use — ring road, city, occasional highway — this is more than sufficient.

This is honestly one of the strongest areas of the XOOM 125R FI, and the 14-inch wheels are the main reason.

14-inch wheels — why it matters for Nepal:

Standard 125cc scooters like the Honda Dio 125 and Hero Xoom 110 run 12-inch wheels. The XOOM 125R FI's 14-inch setup means:

• The wheel rolls over potholes and road edges more smoothly
• Straight-line stability is noticeably better at higher speeds
• Cornering feels more confident and less nervous
• On broken road patches — common near construction zones across Kathmandu — the ride is calmer

On the Bhaktapur bypass road where there are frequent broken sections and sharp road edges, the XOOM 125R FI felt planted where a 12-inch scooter would have felt skittish.

Turning radius:

The 1.6-metre turning radius is among the tightest in the 125cc segment. U-turns on narrow Kathmandu roads — the kind you face near Ason, New Road, and around Baneshwor — are easy and require minimal space.

Seat height and ergonomics:

At 777 mm seat height, most riders above 5'2" can flat-foot without difficulty. The seat is wider than it looks from the side — the dual-texture anti-skid design provides good grip during dynamic riding. Rider and pillion ergonomics are comfortable for trips up to 45–60 minutes.

Suspension:

Front telescopic forks feel slightly firm compared to the softer setup on the Honda Dio 110. This firmness works in your favour at higher speeds and on moderately broken roads — the scooter stays composed. On very rough patches at low speed, you feel more impact than on softer-tuned competitors.

Rear single-side shock absorber with adjustor allows preload adjustment — useful if you frequently carry a pillion. Set it firmer with a pillion, softer for solo riding.

Front disc + rear drum with IBS (Integrated Braking System):

IBS is Hero's version of combined braking. When you press the rear brake, the system also applies some force to the front brake. This gives shorter, more stable stops and prevents rear wheel lock-up — especially useful for new riders.

In practical testing on the ring road at 60 km/h, emergency stops felt controlled and safe. The front disc gives confident, progressive bite. No sudden grabbing.

On wet roads during the pre-monsoon showers we caught on the Bhaktapur road, the IBS kept the stopping balanced without drama.

Honest comparison with CBS on Honda Dio:

IBS and CBS (on Honda Dio) are different implementations of the same idea — linked braking. Both work well for city riding. Neither is as advanced as ABS. For most daily Nepal riding, both are adequate safety systems.

No ABS: Like most 125cc scooters in Nepal, the XOOM 125R FI does not have ABS. For very experienced riders this is not a concern. For new riders, especially in wet conditions, ABS would provide a meaningful extra safety layer.

Mileage is one of the XOOM 125R FI's best qualities.

Our measured figures by condition:

The uphill mileage drop is expected — any scooter climbs at the cost of fuel. On flat city roads, the XOOM 125R FI is genuinely fuel efficient.

Fuel tank and range:

The 5-litre tank is slightly smaller than the Honda Dio 125 and Honda Shine. At 50 km/l average, the realistic range is 240–260 km per full tank. For a Kathmandu daily commuter doing 20–25 km daily, that is around 10–12 days between fills. Reasonable and economical.

Annual fuel cost estimate for 12,000 km/year at 50 km/l and NPR 180/litre:

The XOOM saves you roughly NPR 2,000–5,000 per year in fuel compared to competitors. Not dramatic, but real.

The XOOM 125R FI has a solid feature list for its price — especially considering it is cheaper than both the Honda Dio 125 H-Smart and TVS NTorq 125.

Bluetooth — is it actually useful?

The Bluetooth on the XOOM 125R FI connects your phone to the digital console for basic notifications. It is not as advanced as Honda's RoadSync system on the Dio 125 which shows Google Maps navigation on screen. The XOOM's Bluetooth shows incoming calls and basic alerts. Useful but not transformative.

19.2-litre underseat storage:

This is genuinely impressive. The Honda Dio 125 also has 18 litres but the XOOM's 19.2-litre space fits a full-face helmet, which is the real test. We tested it with a mid-size helmet — it fits, though not loosely. For daily use carrying bags, grocery, or a jacket, this storage is very practical.

5-year / 50,000 km warranty:

This deserves emphasis. Hero gives 5 years or 50,000 km warranty on the XOOM 125R FI. Honda gives 3 years / 36,000 km on the Dio 125. TVS gives 3 years / 30,000 km on NTorq. For a Nepal buyer who plans to ride this scooter for 4–5 years, Hero's warranty is a genuine financial advantage — any major issues within that window are covered.

We used the XOOM 125R FI as a daily commuter for two full weeks. Honest daily assessment:

Starting:

Cold start on a cool Kathmandu morning — electric start fires it in under a second. Fuel injection means no warm-up needed. Ready to ride immediately.

Traffic filtering:

The 739 mm body width and 1.6-metre turning radius made Kathmandu's tight traffic easy to manage. Near Kalanki junction during peak hours, the scooter moved through gaps cleanly without stress.

Ground clearance at 164 mm:

Cleared every speed breaker on the ring road without scraping. On the sharp entry ramps to petrol pumps in Koteshwor, no issues. The 14-inch wheel setup also helps approach angle — the wheel contacts road obstacles more gradually than a smaller wheel.

Storage in real life:

We carried a 15-inch laptop bag, a small grocery bag, and a jacket — all fitting under the seat with the lid closing properly. For daily use, the 19.2-litre space handles practical carrying needs.

Heat management:

After 30 minutes in slow ring road traffic on a warm day, the air-cooled engine temperature was normal. No heat discomfort for the rider. The scooter managed city traffic heat without any concern.

Service schedule:

Important note: The 2,000 km service interval is shorter than the Honda Dio 125 (3,000 km). For a daily commuter doing 25–30 km daily — about 700–900 km per month — this means a service visit every 2–3 months. More frequent than Honda but not unreasonably so.

Good in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan. More limited in smaller towns compared to Honda. If you are based outside a major city and plan to travel frequently, Honda's wider service network has a practical advantage.

Full 125cc scooter comparison in Nepal:

The XOOM 125R FI is NPR 18,000 cheaper than the Honda Dio 125 H-Smart and NPR 28,000+ cheaper than the NTorq 125. For that saving, you give up Honda's smart key and TFT display, or NTorq's stronger engine — but you gain the 5-year warranty and 14-inch wheel stability.

What it does very well:

The 14-inch wheels are the standout feature in real Nepal riding. On the broken patches near Bhaktapur bypass, on the pothole sections near Balkhu bridge, on the gravel edges of the Nagarkot access road — the XOOM 125R FI stays calmer and more stable than any 12-inch scooter we have ridden on the same roads. This is not a spec sheet advantage. It is something you feel in your hands and confidence on every ride.

The 5-year warranty is the second genuinely useful advantage. For a scooter that costs NPR 3.1 lakh, knowing you have 5 years of coverage — not 3 — is meaningful peace of mind for a daily rider.

Where to be realistic:

It is not the most powerful 125cc scooter. The TVS NTorq 125 will out-accelerate it. It does not have the brand trust of Honda. The Dio 125 H-Smart will hold resale value better. The Bluetooth system is basic compared to Honda RoadSync. These are real gaps, not imaginary ones.
